Atalaya alata. (Sapindaceae) Lebombo Wing Nut (e), Lebombo Kransesseboom (a), umNondo (z). Hardy small to medium sized semi-deciduous to deciduous tree (depending on the weather) with a dense dark crown. Profuse showy sprays of white flowers are borne from Sept. to Dec. The unusual half-moon shaped leaves droop gracefully and turn yellow before they drop. The new growth of leaves is a delicate pale green. The seeds are propeller shaped and hang in bunches. The attractive light greyish-white bark is fissured, ideal for birds to probe under. Ideal for a small garden in either sun or semi-shade. Its natural habitat is on rocky outcrops and along streams. Size 3 to 10m. S.A. No. 427. Sowing : Sow seed in summer. Prepare a well-drained, well-aerated soil mix in a seed tray. Spread the seeds in the tray and cover them with a layer of bark or river sand. Water the seed tray with a very fine nozzle, place it in a warm place and always keep it moist. The seeds will take about 3 weeks to germinate. Locality: Pretoria. Harvest: April 2019.
