Description

Eliokarmos pruinosus white with light brown (Ornithogalum pruinosum). It is a perennial geophyte of Namaqualand, the Richtersveld and the western Karoo. It grows on rocky slopes and plateaus, blooming in early spring. At the base of the plant the stalk is clasped by four to six broad, triangular leaves, grey-green in colour. The compact raceme of white flowers appears at the top of a sturdy, erect flower stalk. Each fragrant flower is a wide cup of six tepals with pointed, acute tips spreading to about 2 cm in diameter. In the flower centre the stamens, topped with yellow anthers, spread around the prominent yellow ovary and style. Sowing : Sow seeds in autumn in a well-draining medium. Spread seeds thinly to prevent damping-off. Cover with a thin layer of river sand. Keep moist. Seed will germinate in about 2 weeks after sowing. Locality: Kamieskroon. Harvest: October 2020
