Description

Greyia sutherlandii (Greyiaceae) Natal Bottlebrush (e), Natalse Baakhout (a), umBande (z), inDalu (x). Hardy, drought resistant, rugged looking, deciduous shrub or small tree with attractive round leaves and masses of magnificent, brilliant red flowers in early summer. The flowers are rich in nectar, which attracts sunbirds to the garden. When blooming en masse they are a sight never to be forgotten. The leaves turn a lovely red in autumn. This tree for a sunny or semi-shade position requires well-drained soil. Thrives in rocky soils. Makes a good container plant and a wonderful tree for a small garden. The soft pale pink wood is used for household items. Size 2 to 7m. S.A. No. 446. Sowing : Sow seed in late summer in a seed tray of well-drained soil. Treat seed with fungicide to prevent damping off. Keep the seed tray damp in a warm position. Locality : Harrismith. Harvest : September 2021
