Description

Haemanthus humilis subsp. hirsutus (Amarillidaceae). Rabbit Ears (e), Veldskoenblaar (a), sekitla (ss). Very hardy, deciduous, bulbous plant with broad, mostly hairy, leaves. Short stems with a stiff brush-like head of white to pink flowers are produced with the leaves from Sept. to Feb. Fleshy, oval, white to orange fruit are attractive and sought after by birds. Plant in semi-shade. Looks attractive growing in between rocks. Used in traditional medicine. Size 30cm. Sowing : Place seeds on seedling mix and press down untill halfway burried. Do not cover. Sow as fresh as possible. Locality : Dirkiesdorp. Date of harvest : January 2013
