Description

Tetraria thermalis(Cyperaceae). Sowing: Tetraria thermalis It is a tufted perennial, a robust grower to 2,5 m. The coarse, wiry leaves are yellow-green, arching backwards. They are sword-shaped and keeled with sharp, entire margins that can cut into flesh. At the base the leaves become 3 cm wide, tapering to acutely pointed tips. The flowering stems are solid, three-sided and erect, well longer than the leaves. The flowers are clustered spikelets spaced up the stems, subtended by dusky-brown bracts that overlap. Sowing: Seed is best sown in autumn when day and night temperatures are about 15°C apart. Nights have cooled to about 10°C with day temperatures about 25°C. Sow in a well-drained medium in seed trays and cover with a thin layer of medium milled bark. Water moderately. Germination takes about 3 weeks. Prick out the seedlings into individual containers once the first true stems/culms have developed. Locality: Elim. Harvest: June 2020
