It is a tufted grass, up to 1 m high. Culms erect or ascending at a sharp angle, often branched from the base and lower nodes, hairless, smooth, often purplish. Leaves linear, up to 15 cm long, usually flat, scabrid above, usually hairless beneath; margins thickened. Sowing density – 4g/m².
