Babiana hirsuta (Iridaceae). Sowing: Previous name used to be Babiana thunbergii. It is a deciduous plant that possesses corms with long necks covered with tough and fibrous tunics. The plants have stems that can easily reach 50 cm, with at least half of their length underground. Several tough, hairy branches are either horizontal, ascending or erect. The lanceolate leaves may reach a length of up to 30 cm, are ribbed and sometimes minutely hairy. The showy flowers are carried on horizontal racemes and vary in colour from bright red to shades of orange and apricot. Sowing : Seed is sown in autumn, thinly, in deep (min. 10 cm) seed trays, to allow for root development. The soil medium should be well drained, a recommended mix being 2 parts sand : 2 parts compost : 1 part loam or equal parts sand and compost, and the seeds should be planted 3-4 mm deep, covered with clean sand and kept moist and lightly shaded.
