Banksia hookeriana
Family: Proteaceae
Common names: Hooker’s Banksia
One of the most commonly used banksias for cut flowers, Banksia Hookeriana flaunts yellow-orange flowers amongst stunning green serrated leaves from winter into summer, attracting all sorts of birds and insects. Doing well in most soils but preferring poorer, sandy or clay soils with very good drainage, this banksia will thrive in a full sun position, and makes a great addition to any native waterwise garden bed, due to its drought and frost tolerance once established. As with all banksias, it is recommended to stick to a quality native fertilizer, as they do not do well with high phosphorus levels, and does appreciate a light pruning during growing season, and regular watering’s during dry spells.
Sowing instructions: Sow seeds 3mm deep. Keep soil moist but never wet or dry. Seeds should germinate in around 21-40 at a soil temperature of 20-25°C. Transplant seedlings to the garden once they have their first true leaves and are large enough to handle (usually 5-10cm tall).
