Carissa macrocarpa (Apocynaceae) It is an ornamental shrub that is wind resistant and can grow in coastal areas. It usually forms a dense thorny shrub but it can grow into a small tree up to 4 m high. This species has Y- shaped thorns. Leaves are leathery, a shiny dark green above and paler below. The flowers vary in size, up to 35 mm in diameter, are pure white and scented like orange blossom. The large, oval red fruit is edible and is rich in Vitamin C, magnesium and phosphorus. Sowing: Seed should be sown in spring or during summer, in a well-drained seedling mix, and need only be covered lightly with the sowing mix, clean coarse sand or milled bark to stop it from blowing away. The trays should be kept moist in a warm but shaded position. Locality: George. Harvest: January 2024
