Cucumis metuliferus (Cucurbitaceae). This climber is indigenous to the summer rainfall areas of South Africa. The fruits are edible in salads when young and very juicy. The fruit is triangular in shape, with scattered spines which are rather stout, fleshy, deep green-grey, ripening yellow to orange-red with obscure longitudinal stripes of small pale markings.
