A dioecious, upright or climbing shrub to about 4 m tall, distributed from Mozambique to South Africa, in grasslands, woodlands and along forest margins, at elevations below 300 m. It presents oval-shaped, stiff, leathery leaves, glabrous above and densely covered by whitish hairs below and yellow, fragrant flowers followed by dehiscent berries covered in golden colored hairs. Diospyros villosa will make a great ornamental for many tropical climates.
Sowing instructions: Seed should be sown in spring or during summer, in a well-drained seedling mix, and need only be covered lightly with the sowing mix, clean coarse sand or milled bark. The trays should be kept moist in a warm but shaded position.
