Drosera tokaiensis

Family: Droseraceae

It is a stunning Sundew that can develop bright red coloration and is one of the easiest among carnivorous plants to take care of. It is an ideal plant to start your carnivorous plant journey and a great first specimen for what is sure to be a growing collection of these fascinating plants! Drosera tokaiensis is a beautiful, low-profile, ‘rossetted’, sundew native to Japan with a fascinating evolutionary origin. Is believed to have originated from a natural cross between widespread populations of Drosera spatula and Drosera rotundifolia. Though crossing those two parent species results in infertile offspring, Drosera tokaiensis as we know it today is thought to be the result of a ‘polyploid’ mutation that occurred in one or more hybrid individuals and changed its number of chromosomes, making it fertile and creating a distinct new species.

Sowing instructions: Use a soil mix of 50% peat moss and 50% perlite. Make sure the soil is completely moist. Use a 4-inch pot if you are sowing a small pinch of these seeds. Sprinkle your seeds evenly over the soil and very gently tap them down. Keep your pot in standing water. Use a tray or a bowl to set your pot in, and fill it up with water. Keep the water line no more than half way up the pot. Use water that is low in minerals. Keep the air temperature between 75° and 85°F for optimal germination.
