Fouquieria macdougallii (Fouquieriaceae). (price per 10 seeds) This large spiky shrub occurs on rocky slopes Mexico. Long, spiny branches often referred to as canes arise from a short thick trunk. Mature plants can reach 24 feet in height, but typically they are found much smaller. The small green leaves that line the branches are drought-deciduous, but will remain on the plant with supplemental irrigation. Bright red flower clusters appear primarily in spring, but plants may bloom intermittently throughout the year attracting hummingbirds. Plant in well drained soils.
