It is a succulent perennial, 3-7 cm tall, occurring in dry rocky scrub. The stems are 9-13 mm in diameter, 5-angled, tubercles tipped with a hard tooth. Flowers 2.5-5 cm in diameter with spreading lobes, covered on the inside with fleshy pointed papillae. This is a rooted cutting.
