Nelumbo nucifera (Lotus – double pink)

Family: Nelumbonaceae

Common names: Lotus, Sacred Lotus, Indian Lotus.

The Lotus flower is a sacred plant in many cultures and has spiritual significance. It is known for its beauty, purity, and resilience. Sacred lotus plants are easily recognized by their large round leaves, which are held as much as 2 metres above the water surface instead of floating on it. The slightly hairy leaves can grow up to about 60 cm across and can be funnel- or cup-shaped. The large, attractive, fragrant flowers stand as much as 1.8 metres above the water on strong leafless stalks. The flowers may be up to 25 cm across and have a number of pink- or rose-coloured petals, which close at night.

Sowing instructions: Scarify the seed on one side with sanding paper to break through the hard outer shell. Then drop your seeds into warm water in a clear container and set them on a sunny windowsill to germinate. Keeping the water warm and clean will ensure a quick sprout. Change the water if cloudy to prevent bacteria growth. You should see sprouting in a week, roughly.
