Searsia laevigata (100 seeds)

Family: Anacardiaceae

Common names: Dune Taaibos, Umhlakothi

Much-branched, often deciduous shrub up to 2m, branches often infested with pea-sized galls. Leaves divided into 3 stalkless leaflets, smooth or hairy, the middle one larger at about 4 x 2.5cm, net veins are translucent when held up to the light; insignificant flowers greenish-yellow; male and female flowers on separate plants. Fruits round and shiny. Traditionally the leaves, bark and roots were used medicinally. The common name Taaibos refers to the tough and resilient character of the branches.

Sowing instructions: The seeds are cleaned by rubbing off the outer parts. Sow in a medium made up of one part mountain gravel, one part compost/leaf mould, and one part red soil. Mix well until you have a very well-drained, loose mixture. No artificial fertilizers should be added. Seed trays must have good drainage. Scatter the seeds lightly over the prepared, damp sowing mixture. Firm them down lightly. Cover with coarse sand. Place the seed tray in a cool, shady, well-ventilated house. The sun should not shine on the seed tray in the germinating stage
