Worsleya procera (price per 1 seed)

Family: Amaryllidaceae

Common names: Empress of Brazil, Blue Amaryllis.

It is one of the rarest and most sought after bulbs in the world. The lilac-blue flowers are borne in clusters on a tall stalk, above distinct sickle-shaped, flat leaves. Endemic to eastern Brazil, where it is critically endangered, it is the one of the largest species in the family, growing up to 1.5 metres tall. The magnificent flowers and unusual form make this plant highly sought after in horticulture trade. In cultivation, they thrive on free-draining, porous substrates such as pumice.

Sowing instructions: The flotation method works. Seeds need moisture and light to germinate, so it’s either that, or on the surface of, or pointy end stuck into compost which may or may not be moist enough. You can see the instant the seed has germinated and watch the root grow long enough to move it on.

Locality: Ex Hort. Harvest: March 2025
